may have to evacuate again. >> what we've heard is that the fire has come down and it has jumped the creek so it is now way back in this canyon here. they say they've put it out. but if the wind changes, what are you going to do? >> i lived in ojai for a little while and i watched a fire come almost into the valley, but this is the first fire i've seen close up and personal here. >> reporter: that resident also voiced concern about the neighborhood water shed which is currently threatened by the fire. there are dozens of firefighters who have been dispatched here from the bay area. many are stationed near the homes to provide fire protection in case it gets any close. now the good news about this fog that has just rolled in is that the moisture helps to choke out the fire, so that it does move slower. unfortunately, it also means that air crews cannot mobilize. so helicopters and planes cannot dump water or fire retardant and
5:01 pm
that is not very good news for the progress of the fire fight. live in monterey county, i'm sergio quintana, abc 7 news. >> the air looks so thick there. thank you so much for that report. and well smoke from the fire and along with hot temperatures is prompting another spare the air alert for tomorrow. we're taking a live look from the san jose camera right now. people there are already reporting some smokey skies. >> now the national weather service said smoke from the soberanes fire is also coming into reno and the sierra. you could see it in the distance on the left and from a satellite on the right. let's check in with meteorologist sandhya patel with a quick check on weather conditions right now. >> right now, near the fire, it is cool. 58 degrees. take a look at the conditions. relative humidity 84% thanks to the fog around. wind out of the west northwest at 10. gusts are nonexistent. but take a look at the next 24 hours. it will get gusty. it is typically the time of year, where you do see windy
5:02 pm
conditions and in the late afternoon and evening in this area. and the smoke from that fire on satellite drifting from the mobter a bay -- bonder a bay toward the bay area and toward the lake tahoe, to the region. here is a look at lake tahoe live where you could see those smokey skies. that is part of the reason why we are looking at a spare the air for tomorrow. it is going to get hotter here in the bay area. i'll let you know how hot when i come back. natasha. >> thank you. the democratic national convention is underway in philadelphia. and there is a lot more shouting than shout-outs. >> excuse me. excuse me. >> you could hear it. the chair of the convention was drowned out as were many speakers when they mentioned hillary clinton's name. supporters of bernie sanders are upset over a leak that showed some dnc staffers plotted against sanders. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony joins us live from philadelphia with more.
5:03 pm
laura? >> reporter: hi, natasha. well this fragile peace between hillary clinton supporters and bernie sanders have been rocked to start this convention amid this e-mail scandal that has cost the dnc chair her job and her place at this convention. >> in the end. it wasn't meant to be for outgoing democratic national committee chair debbie wasserman schultz. a decision to allow the florida congresswoman to gavel the convention was rescinded after she was booed off the stage by her own delegation at a morning breakfast in philadelphia. >> all right, everybody, now, settle down. >> reporter: the outburst came after e-mails released by wikileaks revealed some dnc staffers were exploring ways to undermine the primary campaign of bernie sanders. >> sorry to see her go but i understand she didn't want to be any more of a distraction and there is always room for fresh leadership and so the change will be one that we want to make
5:04 pm
sure we embrace. >> there were fireworks at the california delegation breakfast where alex padilla was drowned out by loud sanders supporters. >> i was going to ask, is anybody fired up? who is ready for the convention? put your hands together, so we could channel this passion. >> it is the democratic party. and we have never been a monolith. and we've always tried to reach consensus. but unanimity, it is just an impossible for any party. >> but it doesn't appear all sanders supports are ready to build consensus as they march in the streets of philadelphia and argue case with clinton supporters inside of the convention. >> you have somebody who is -- easily described as a -- lying and cheating, to get her way and it just does not make a very good candidate to get behind. >> reporter: now late this
5:05 pm
afternoon, the dnc issued this apology, quote, on behalf of everyone at the dnc, we want to offer a deep and sincere apology to bernie sanders and his supporters and the entire democratic party for the inexcusable remarks made over e-mail. that came from donna brazil who is the interim dnc chair. now let's take a live look at the wells fargo arena in philadelphia. those boos that we heard earlier, every time hillary clinton's name was mentioned, they have died down significantly as the night has moved on. in part because we believe bernie sanders asked his supporters not to protest here on the convention floor. as for the protests outside, i could tell you they have died down as well, for a different reason. there is a severe weather thunderstorm warning here in the philadelphia area. along with a flash flood warning. heavy rain. so the protests have died down at least for now. live in philadelphia, laura

anthony, abc 7 news. >> thank you for tracking that, laura. and the weather is also causing problems in new york. take a look at thissin cred picture of lightning -- this incredible picture of lightning hitting the empire state building. >> that storm rolled through chicago. lightning hits a telephone pole causing it to explode into flames. someone shot this video driving in the storm. an out of control fire burning in southern california. just look at the embers in the air. firefighters in los angeles county are facing really dangerous conditions brought out by the massive wildfire near santa clarita. the the sand fire has burned 33,000 acres which is more than 51 square miles. our sister station is live on the fire lines for us tonight. mark? >> reporter: still very warm out here and breezy this afternoon.
5:07 pm
we're about 30 miles north of los angeles. just south of santa clarita. we'll pull out the camera for you. you could see the plume of smoke stretching across the sky. it is the windy conditions that have made this fight so difficult for crews out here. for the fourth day in a row. firefighters deal with explosive conditions on the front lines of the sand fire. at times, we're just feet away. >> we've seen some big runs on the fire. and that is an issue of concern for us. >> sandy is a seasoned veteran when it comes to fires with characteristics such as this, when by 10:00 a.m. warming temperatures an gusty winds begin to fan the flames. >> the problem is that we have seen a shift in the weather pattern each day where the prevailing winds push it in a different direction and what was a quiet portion of the fire today what a more active portion today. >> this location, you see we have helicopters in the sky and firefighters from the u.s. forest service behind us. we were just told to leave this
5:08 pm
area. it is not safe with the shifting winds. >> we're preparing for the fire to blow through and we'll put out smokers and hot spot. >> reporter: the firefighters are among those helping to protect these homes along the running horse road in the canyon. homeowners were initially evacuated from here on saturday afternoon. then a second alert sent out shortly after 11:00 a.m. today advising homeowners to leave if they hadn't already. staying any longer could cause a real issue on the narrow roads both in and out. >> up in the sky, through this morning and through the afternoon, i'm told that that effort has been crucial in getting this fire put out. but still a lot of work to do. there is no doubt that this fire has grown throughout the day. but the latest update that we have from fire officials put it at over 33,000 acres and 10% contained. for now we are live near santa clarita, back to you both. >> thanks, mark the great job.
